What does your Venus sign mean?
In astrology, Venus is the planet of love, attraction, pleasure and values. Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in when you were born. It describes how you show affection, what draws you to other people and what you want a relationship to feel like.
Your sun sign is the core of who you are. Your Venus sign is closer to what you are like when you care about someone. Two people with the same sun sign can love in very different ways, and the Venus sign is where astrologers look for the difference.
Each sign has its own page. Here is the short version of all twelve:
| Venus in | Element | In a few words |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Aries | Fire | Direct, bold, quick to fall |
| Venus in Taurus | Earth | Loyal, sensual, steady |
| Venus in Gemini | Air | Witty, curious, talkative |
| Venus in Cancer | Water | Caring, protective, sentimental |
| Venus in Leo | Fire | Warm, generous, proud |
| Venus in Virgo | Earth | Attentive, modest, practical |
| Venus in Libra | Air | Charming, fair, partnership-minded |
| Venus in Scorpio | Water | Intense, private, devoted |
| Venus in Sagittarius | Fire | Free, honest, adventurous |
| Venus in Capricorn | Earth | Serious, loyal, committed |
| Venus in Aquarius | Air | Independent, friendly, unconventional |
| Venus in Pisces | Water | Romantic, empathic, dreamy |
Why does Venus change sign so often?
Venus moves through the zodiac faster than any planet you can see except Mercury. From Earth it passes through one sign in about three to four weeks. It takes about a year to go all the way round.
That is why the birth date is nearly always enough. For more than nine in ten birthdays, Venus stays in one sign for the whole day, and the time of birth makes no difference. On the other days, Venus crosses into a new sign at some hour. Then the exact time and the time zone decide your sign, and the calculator says so.
Venus also goes retrograde about every 19 months. For around six weeks it appears to move backward, and it can cross back into a sign it already left. If you were born in one of those windows, the calculator tells you. Our Venus retrograde guide has the dates through 2031.
Venus right now: Venus is in Scorpio and is retrograde.
How accurate is the calculator?
The astronomy is precise. The calculator uses the open-source astronomy-engine library, which is accurate to within one arcminute, a sixtieth of a degree. The sign is right unless Venus was close to a sign border on your birth date, and then the page tells you to check your birth time.
What a sign means is a matter of tradition, not measurement. No study has shown that a Venus sign predicts who you will love or whom you will get along with. We treat the readings as a prompt for thinking about what you value in love. Read how it all works on the method page.
What to do with your Venus sign
Start with the page for your sign. It covers how you love, what attracts you, what you need from a partner and where this placement tends to trip up. Then enter the birth date of a partner or a friend and compare the two in the compatibility guide.
Treat all of it as a mirror. If a line sounds like you, it is worth noticing. If it does not, ignore it. Your own experience is a better guide than any sign.
